Catholic Social Services and Sidney Home Pharmacy to Partner for National Falls Prevention Day
Are you aware that 1 in 3 older Ohioans will fall this year? The month of September is National Falls Prevention month. The Ohio Department of Aging, in conjunction with the Ohio Injury Prevention Partnership and Steady U, is urging everyone to work together to increase awareness of the serious consequences of falling, especially for the elderly.
Locally, Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley (CSSMV) and Sidney Hometown Pharmacy are partnering for a Falls Prevention Awareness Day event. On Friday, September 22, consumers are invited to bring a list of their medications to the pharmacy at 130 W. Russell Rd. in Sidney anytime between 9:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Pharmacist Bob Curlis will be available to go over the medications and share information about possible drug interactions and which drugs may cause dizziness or increase the risk for falling. Participants will receive a “goodie bag” from Catholic Social Services that includes literature giving helpful tips about preventing falls and staying safe at home.
The event is open to anyone; you do not have to be a regular customer of Sidney Hometown Pharmacy to come.
The Ohio Department of Aging is telling us to “Age Out Loud.” Work to make your home safer for yourself and your loved ones by removing clutter and tripping hazards, putting railings on stairs and adding grab bars in the bathroom, and maintaining good lighting, especially on stairs. Reduce your risk of falling by beginning an exercise program to improve leg strength and balance, reviewing your medications, and improving your vision with annual eye exams.
Like it or not, we will all age, but we can continue living “well beyond 60” by being aware of possible risks to our independence and taking positive steps to reduce those risks.
