From the Village of Russia and Shelby County Emergency Management Agency...
This weekend on Saturday morning you will see firetrucks, squads, law enforcement vehicles take over part of Russia. This is just a training exercise that is taking place to better prepare our First Responders in case of an actual emergency. The exercise will consist of a train derailment with a possible chemical leak near the Schafer gas station on Francis St. The training will last from 8 am to 12 noon.
During this exercise the Russia Community Fire Company, HAZMAT personnel and various EMS and Fire departments throughout the county will be utilizing some of their planned procedures to offset the damage and loss that could occur during such an emergency.
Some residents in town will receive a recorded phone message early this week to test the phone system notification, that a training exercise will be happening on Saturday. These same residents will receive a similar message on Saturday with instructions on what to do. THIS IS ONLY A MESSAGE AND NO ONE WILL HAVE TO TAKE ANY ACTION. The message may say to shelter in place, which means to stay inside and shut all windows and doors, or the message may say evacuate immediately with a proper way to evacuate the Village. Again this is only a drill and there will be no need to take any action.
There may even be law enforcement or fire officials going door to door to help with the evacuating process, again this is only a drill, but to achieve the objectives they are going to make this as a “real life scenario” as possible.
During this time the area around Francis and Cordonnier St. will be utilized for the training, and may be congested if you need to use those streets just remember the increased foot traffic in the area. There will also be an area for you to observe the training if interested just west of the gas pumps, we ask though, if you wish to watch that you stay in the area that is marked for spectators.
If you have any questions regarding this exercise you can call me at 937-526-4436 or Cheri Drinkwine EMA Director at 937-726-1731
