Coach Kevin Fell To Return For 1989 Anniversary
Plans are now finalized for the public program to celebrate the silver anniversary of the 1989 Sidney Yellow Jackets journey to the state football semi-finals. On Sunday November 9 at 2pm in the SHS auditorium, the Sidney City Schools, Shelby County Historical Society, and host Dave Ross will present "Sidney Football 1989...A November To Remember."
Ross, who authored a book on the first century of SHS football, says the 1989 season stands tall in Sidney football history. "The season not only had a significant result but there were many close and exciting games along the way. The community really got into it. 1989 was definitely the highlight of my 30 years of broadcasting Yellow Jacket football," he explained.
The format will be an on-stage discussion of the 1989 season with a panel of coaches and players led by head coach Kevin Fell, who will be coming from Elyria in northeast Ohio where he remains a head football coach and is headed to the 2014 Division I playoffs. Longtime assistant and Sidney native Dan Allen will also appear along with senior players Mike Gallimore, Dave Kaser, and Todd Taylor.
Gallimore was the quarterback and Kaser the featured running back. The duo shared the Dick Flanagan MVP award for 1989. Taylor, currently an Indiana Pacers NBA executive, was a receiver and defensive back. Gallimore now resides in the Dayton area while the other two are near Indianapolis.
1989 team members not on the panel will be introduced during the program, which will begin with the announcement from the OHSAA of the football playoff games to be hosted at Sidney Memorial Stadium the following weekend. No admission will be charged.
"A November To Remember" does not conflict with Bengals or Browns televised football, as the two will have played each other on Thursday night.
